Subject: '99 dakota won't always shift to OD IP: Logged
Message: We just had our '99 dakota in to have cylinoids replaced b/c it wasn't shifting into OD. That didn't fix the problem. Thing is it doesn't always do it-typically just after you start it up after a long time of sitting on cold days.
Anyone got suggestions on what it could be?

Message: Engine has to reach normal operating temperature to allow shift into overdrive. It is not supposed to shift when it's cold. It's normal.

Message: Sometimes it takes longer than reaching 'operating temperature' because that is for your engine, not transmission.
I find that if I let it sit and idle for a while it will go into OD on it's own, but if I drive without letting it idle it won't shift into OD.

Message: thats basicly the issue... due to cold weather.. what happens is that trans holds out gear due to engine temp being cold... it allows for the RPMS to stay high so the engine can build temp... normally it should go into OD after a moment or 2.... there is an additive that you can get thats made from the maker of GUNK products... its called Trans Medic... its suppose to help with sticky actualtors in the trans for added help with better shifts... you can try that if you got a good bit of mileage on the truck

Message: It was probably not the sols
There is a temp sensor in the presure sensor that
will cause this prob
replace both presure sensor and presure sol
around $200

Message: try this...put trani in "Neutral" when you're letting the vehicle warm up from cold start...just make sure you have the e-brake on.

Message: You never said how cold it has to be for this to happen. My 99 goes in to OD untill temperatures get below 0 degrees. Then it needs to run a while. About 15 below it will not shift to OD at all unless I stop for about 10 minutes. Then it will go in but first time it shifts out of OD it stays out again.Trouble shooting in factory repair manual says this is normal give or take a few degrees
So many problems. So little time
