The engine light on my 2001 3.9 2wd Dakota (130000 Miles) has had the engine light on for the past 8 months. I just figured out how to pull up the code, and it is a P 0420 [Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)] My mechanic, whom I just started to go to, advised me to change the catalytic converters, but a mechanic at the dealer told me to change the O2 sensors. I am tight on chash and I odnt want to do both if it is not necessary, so what do you think I should do and what exactly is the problem?

Thanks

find another mechanic. he should be able to tell if the cat conventer is working or not by using an infrared thermometer.

I got the cats tested and they are at 75% efficiency, but my mechanic told me to change them first b/c he told me that on previous dakota's, after changing the o2's the cats go shortly thereafter. I am just looking to see what the cheapest way to fix the problem may be.

Thanks

The mechanic told me that the cats are working, but may not be functioning ALL of the time, since the light goes off and on, but the dealership says the O2's on the Dak arent the greatest and they might be what is not functioning ALL of the time, so I was just wonderring if anyone had had a similar situation which I could benefit from since I am just short on cash right now.

Thanks

Guess you missed the reply by daddio. No one here can tell you the final answer. you need more testing and diddio gave you the best way to find out FOR SURE which is not working correct. Did you actually pay to have your truck checked (no shop runs a check for free) or did you just ask them a question.

So many problems .... So little time

My mechanic doesn't charge me for the check b/c he knows do ALL of my work there, and I just asked the dealership the question b/c I would probably have to sell the truck to get them to check the truck and fix the exact problem!!! I'll get him to do that check for me and i'll let him fix the prob. Thanx for the advice guys

Just another stupid question.....How many O2 sensors are on the dakota and where are they located(ex. 1 before and after main cat, 1 each before pre-cats)?

Thanx
