Subject: Heater blower problem IP: Logged
Message: My heater fan only comes on when I have it in the max fan position. When it's turned all the way to the 4th setting (max blow). It doesn't matter if I turn on the a/c or turn down the heat or change it from vent to defrost. The blower only comes on when I turn the fan dial to the max.
2002 3.9 swapped to a 360 supercharged in october, 5spd sport 4x4
Now I did have 1 code from the swap which occurred 1494 (I think) Leak pump detection or something. When I reset the battery (after the heater failed) the code went away and never came back.
If anybody has an idea let me now, I'll check all the fuses (doubt it, but what the hell) and check behind the dash to see if maybe I broke the switch.

Message: Any idea where about that is? Behind the dash or in the motor? I'll check my haynes manual before I do it.

Message: I had a heater blower problem with my '94 Dakota. After wasting time digging behind the dash, I discovered the location of the blower speed control resistors. The resistor assembly is under the hood on the firewall on the passenger side. You should find a plug for 4 or so connector spades. Remove the plug. There are a couple of screws that hold the resistor assembly. Remove these and the assembly should pull out.
The resistors are wire coils, probably nichrome. I was able to rework the corroded connections as a temporary measure and get the motor working again. After over a year now, I have lost the low speed so I need to replace the whole thing.

Message: I have an 89 Dakota that had a bad resistor block.
The Haynes manual that covers that year didn't have a wiring diagram showing the block. Hopefully, the one for your model year will; if not, I put up a page showing how I repaired mine: http://gbrannon.bizhat.com/resistorbox.htm
There is a link on the page to better wiring diagrams for different year model Dakotas.
Regards,
Greg

Message: On your 2002, it should be located in the pass. side footwell...on the bottom of the AC/heater housing.

Message: Thanks a lot for your help. I'll bust it out this weekend so I don't have to turn the music up to drown out the sound of my heater on max heat.
