I just lost power brakes yesterday. Now when I step on the pedal I can hear a steady hissing noise near where the plunger goes through the firewall. Should I assume the power break booster has gone bad? If so...how hard of a job is this to fix in the driveway?

Drop a new master cylinder in and possiblely slave cylinders and bleed the brakes. Really simple work. Good luck.

Hey... I should've been more specific...I have 'brakes'...just no power assist. Thanks for your reply though.

On a side note...I actually did the master cylinder about two months ago. I'm not having good luck with the braking system right now...but at 215K miles..I guess I shouldn't complain huh? ;)

sounds like the seal between the atmospheric and vacuum side of the brake booster is bad. When you apply the brakes, engine vacuum draws some of the incoming atmospheric pressure from the pedal side through the leaking seal, and into the vacuum line and into the intake manifold.

Check to see if there is vacuum in the line at the front of the brake booster, then go from there.

If you have a vacuum pump and gauge, apply vacuum to the booster where the line goes in. It should hold vacuum on the gauge of the pump. If the gauge needle drops at all, then the seal inside the unit is bad, and time to install a new or reman unit.

Another test is turn the truck off, wait about 24 hours, then come back and press the pedal without starting the engine, if it goes down like it would with the engine running, then it is good. But if the pedal is hard to push down, then the diaphragm is leaking inside the unit.

Also, when you apply the brakes with the engine running, does the engine rpm drop or does the engine lope or stall? All of these could be an indication of a bad booster.

wow...great post. Thanks. Basically the engine runs fine until I step on the brake pedal. If I'm sitting at a stop light with my foot on the brake, the engine RPM drop very low and it sounds like it is going to stall. A few seconds after I take my foot off the pedal the RPM come back up and everthing is 'normal' from that perspective. This sounded like a vacuum leak to me too. Furthermore, before the power assist went out completely, if you sat with your foot on the brake for 30 seconds after you turned off the ignition, you could feel the pedal come back to you as the vacuum disappeared. So I guess It looks like I need to replace the unit.

Thanks for your reply. You've offered a lot of good information and I greatly appreciate it.
