Message: I have a 1996 dakota 3.9L V6 auto trans. yesterday comming home from work the check engine light came on I took it to the local Auto zone to plug it into the computer it said I have a missfire in the #3 and #5 cylinder I also had the light come on back in may for the same thing I have gave it a tune up with new wires plugs ect. So it can't be that but lately it has been hesitating when shifting from reverse to drive it has stalled several times while doing this. does anyone know what could cause this thanks

Message: My 89 is doing the same thing. I have bought a new reverse indicator switch but haven't installed it yet, as I am still putting the transfer case back in the 4x4. I just finished changing the automatic w/overdrive transmission filter. I will let you know if the switch helpes the stalling problem we have. Anyone out there ever put a NP207 in an 89 4x4 Dakota in place of the NP231 ??? The shift linkage rod is my problem. Seems to be 1 1/2 inches shorter.
Thanks,

Message: i was having a similiar problem with my 97 dakota 3.9l. my truck was stalling and had an engine knock so i gave it a tune up and it fixed part of the problem but then started doing the knocking again. i found out it was the ignition coil now my truck runs fine. so yopu might want to replace your ignition coil.
