Subject: NO power steering?? IP: Logged
Message: Live in PA. and have a 99 v-6 dakota club cab sport. Woke to a lot of snow and had to go to work. cleaned off my truck and shoveled etc. I was out in it driving yesterday and truck and steering was fine. I dont know what couldve caused this. DO any of you? I need my truck to go to work and im wondering what couldve caused the power steering to stop. I had it running so if a line was frozen wouldnt that thaw it out? its in the high 20s low 30s. ANy ideas as to what happened or what i could look for to fix it or see whats wrong?
When i was getting in it this morning i dont recall whether it was steering normal or not and i drove to end of my street and tried to turn and then hit the curb. I dont think banging into the curb would cause it to lose power i was going quite slow and the tire hit the curb.
Id really appreciate any ideas as to what is wrong or how this happened, ASAP.
thanks
nancy

Message: Have you checked the fluid level? Its not typical that a pump would just quit. It's possible there is a jammed valve in the system, but that's very unusual. Its not likely a line would "freeze up" unless there was some reason there would be water in the system. I wouldn't think the pump itself would b e that expensive, assuming that's the problem. Shows as 65 bucks on autozone.com.

Message: Check the condition of the belt and tensioner, Fluid level, fluid quality(does it look burnt?) Is the pump making any loud noises?
I have seen the pump shaft break clean of but remain in the pump and visualy look okay. I can't remember it thats a Chev problem tho, I forget.

Message: Take a rather large straight screwdriver or small pry bar. Place it behind the power steering pump pulley and pull outwards. If the pulley moves in and out, you have a broken pump shaft. Replace your pump. Seen it a hundred times and it happens real quick, just like you explained.
Where in PA??
