Message: I was wondering how you guys hooked up the MSD 6A. I just got it today from summit Racing. I got the SS blaster and the wiring harness and of course the 6a control Unit. But i was wondering where you guy placed the Control unit cause the battery wires are soo short idk how they are going to reach unless i cut the wires.

Message: My 1994 is different than your GenIII, but...
Looking from the front of the truck, my battery is on the right, and coil on the left.
I mounted the MSD6A vertically on the right side of the radiator shroud. The included wires were just long enough.
But my MSD died, and left me stuck in the Taco Bell drive-thru. So I removed it and never replaced it.
So, make sure you install the wires so you can easily put your original setup back.

Message: Just curious, why are you installing an MSD? Thinking of some seroius mods, say supercharger or something, because if you are not, its not worth the hassle.

Message: I put one on a 95 and bought a mount kit from Summit. I put the mounting plate to the right as you look at the engine against the wall. It sort of sits on the wheel well but is also screwed into the side wall. There's just enough of a gap. When I did the install I moved the thick group of wires on the wheel well resulting in the common wire breaking problem caused by corrosion. I had to take the wires apart and fix the break, after alot of head scratching until I figured it out. I also put the SS Blaster on using a fabricated piece of metal and located it where the original coil was. I followed the wiring diagram for the electrical hook up.

Message: If there's no reason to put on the MSD6a unless you're considering big time mods, what about the Blaster Coil? Will that do me any good with a mostly stock set up? Will it hurt my stock ignition or cause it to wear out sooner?

Message: If you go through the old posts for Mods you will see that the Mods are best if combine with other Mods. Better air (cold Air), increased fuel (TB, fuel injectors), hotter & better spark (plugs, MSD6a, blaster coil), less back pressure (Headers, muffler, cat ). Naturally the improvement in performance depends on how far you go. Beware, once you start it's tough to stop. Many are looking for that one Mod that makes a huge performance increase but in general it's the multiple mods that get the job done. Then again for some even that isn't enough. It is a V6.

Message: The MSD is a good upgrade but you will need to
run 1 colder plug autolite AP3923 and gap at
.055 to .060 to see any gains from the system
On the obd 2 you will also need the tach adapter
or it will trip coil circuit codes
Use the 2 exsisting coil wires check with ohm
meter
on of will show a steady voltage while cranking
signal will go up and down
Be sure you pull your fuel pump relay in the dist
box before cranking or you will flood the motor

Message: The FlowMaster is already in, the TB should be arriving today and the CAI is next on the list.
I'm using the Bosch Platinum +4 plugs. They haven't been in long, but they were a big improvement over the old ones. Would the MSD make any difference with those? How about just using the blaster coil?

Message: Larry,
Ignition upgrades are on my to do list for my 2003 3.9 SXT that I got at the end of last year. I was going to install a MSD 6A, Blaster 2 coil, 8.5mm wires, brass cap & rotor, and I was going to run NGK ZFR6F-11 (which have a gap of .044). You are saying that I need to run a colder plug (the 7F) and gap at .055 or .06. Why is that? Sorry if it is a dumb question, I am new at this stuff but am learning alot from this site. Also, if I am just sticking to "bolt-on" upgrades at this piont which would be better to do first ignition upgrades or exhaust?
Thanks,
Brian

Message: with the hotter spark you can run wider gap for a better/ cleaner burn. i'd start with exhaust first. a hi perf muffler and maybe a hi flow cat. then work on the intake side. a sotre bought or homemade CAI and a V8 or aftermarket 48mm TB.

Message: The +4 bosch never ran good for me good idle and
low end but motors stumbled reving up
The bigger gap will give you a bigger flame front
and better performance and will also cool the
spark down a small gap will run hot
Why do racers use a high output ignition to take
advantage of a bigger gap without getting a
misfire condition
The NGK will work just open the gap .010 at a time
untill perf drops off than back up .005 just like
MSD tells you
