My automatic transmission went south on mu 93 3.9 Dakota. The transmission shop is quoting $1650 for a complete rebuild. Does that sound reasonable?

if you want to go used try here: www.car-part.com
they use salvage yards across the u.s and canada. i helpd a friend of mine get one for his ferd exploder from a yard listed on there. shipped to him with a 6 month warranty for $450.00. that's hard to beat. you may find a yard close enough for you to even pick it up yourself.

I briefly considered that route, but swapping out a transmission is a little out of the question right now. Plus, they may give me a warranty on it, but even so, I'd be the one that has to crawl back under there. I appreciate the suggestion though. $450 certainly sounds better than $1650. I did call another shop in town and they quoted $1750, so I guess that's the market in my area. They'll back it for 14 mos/14,000 miles.

Chris,
I had mine rebuilt at 100K for $1600 or so. I just found the receipt. Total Labor: $840 Total Parts: $750.10 I was originally quoted around $2200 for them to do the entire job from beginning to end. But I asked if I took out the tranny myself how much of a break would they give. They gave me a couple hundred bucks off. I think the price you got quoted is fair. My truck is a 89' V6 4x4. The 4x4 adds some recalculating to mine. Hope this helps. Also, I put in a after market tranny cooler after I had the tranny rebuilt. It may or may not be a good idea to look in to what you got. I know the guy who rebuilt mine told me to or he wasn't going to honor the warranty of his. He said the tranny cooler stock was marginal for it size. He asked that upgrade mine.
