Message: I just recently purchased a 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport, 3.9 V6, believe there's over 200 horses at the fly.
I'm wondering about CHEAP mods one could make to improve performance 1) off the line and 2) on the high end.
Last night I caught up with a friend of mine who drives an MX6. We lined up at the lights. At green, we hammered. Off the line, I took the early and commanding lead, as my truck flew into second, I could see him gaining. But that was it. He couldn't gain on me, I couldn't pull away.
After that, we slowed to 60 k/h. Again, we both let them go. He pulled away, with EASE. Again, after a little bit, we both couldn't gain/pull away.
If anyone has any suggestions, bear in mind, this truck is BARE! I have done NOTHING to it.

Message: The cheapest and easiest mod that I can suggest is an air intake.

Message: i hate to burst your bubble, but you don't have 200hp at the fly. you've got 175, and the reason your not pulling away is exactly what lesley said... you need more air coming in (and eventually out) of the system.
you can either buy a cold air intake or make one yourself...
i've got the instructions to mine (which i think is better than the PVC stuff people are running) on my webpage: http://frontpage.tripod.com/fijigabe0
check it out to see the gains. also, contact bernd or visit his sight... he's got a lot of cool stuff on there for Dakotas.

Message: I've seen 5.2 v8 dyno in the 170s hp in stock trim. Two 3.9 owners dynoed in the 140s hp which is about 175 at the crank. I wish it were true but it is not.

Message: Mick,
They're correct. The 3.9L V6 is rated at 175HP which equates to approximately 140RWHP (+/-5).
Basic suggestions:
(1) Cold Air Intake
(2) Modified Throttle Body
(3) Relocate the IAT Sensor (or an IAT Adjuster)
(4) 180 Degree T'Stat
(5) JBA Ceramic Coated Headers
(6) A decent exhaust system (JBA, Flowmaster, Dynomax, Gibson, etc.)
Those will help you get close to the 170HP at the rear wheels.
