Subject: Auto Trans Problems...BAD IP: Logged
Message: I've been having some shifting issues for a week or so. Every now and then it wouldn't shift into 3rd gear. I'd have to put it in nuetral and then back in drive, and it would shift then.
I changed the fluid, and filter. The book I have says you should adjust the band while the pan is off. It said to loosen the lock bolt 2 turns, then take the adjustment screw in to 72 inch pounds. Well my dumb @ss tok the lock bolt too many turns out to the point I had no idea where it was. I called a Mopar nut I use to work with, and he said it shouldn't matter, and to just take the adjusting screw in till it was snug, and back it out 4 turns.
I did this, and all was good. Drove it to work which was a 42 miles round trip. Yeserday I headed to the beach to have a surf, and on the way home it started shifting really bad, and then the overdrive went out. I checked the fluid, and it was a little low, so I added some, and took it for a test drive. Now when it down shifts to low I hear a clunk sound, and it wont go in reverse at all.
Got it back up on the jack stands with the pan draining right now. Anyone have any idea if I screwed it up by adjusting the rear bands? Or how to adjust them from point zero?
I already called a trans shop, but thought I'd give it one more try before calling a tow truck.
Thanks

Message: I am curoious what happened. I am interested in doing the band adjustment myself too, but not likely reading your post. Read in my manual about how t o go about doing the procedure in all to adjust bands - you did it right. Pretty sure. Different amount of turns for different years.
Anyways, dont be afraid to let us know what went wrong or how it was fixed. It gives us do-it-yourselfers the heads up.
-thanks

Message: It has to be torqued exactly right, or it won't shift correctly. There are two band ajustments. The rear band adjustment is inside the pan. The front adjustment is on the left side of the tranny case. Both require loosening the lockscrew a few turns, torquing to 72 in-lbs, then backing off the specified number of turns (This is important!!!), then locking down the lockscrew to a certain torque so it won't loosen and change the adjustment. I know one requires backing off 2 1/2 turns, and the other is different, but I'd need my book to know which is which.
"Snugging" it down is not good enough and will result in an improper adjustment, which can ruin the clutch bands in short order. Get a torque wrench and a manual and follow the instructions exactly.

Message: Bob Lincoln,
Any info. on why the procedure is actually done? I have drained and replaced my tranny oil the last 60K at 12K intervals and never had I touched the bands or adjusted them. If any thing, my tranny has gradually worked itself in to performing as is expected according to driving conditions. In other words, it use to work funky, weird or harsh shift patterns, and over time it has adjusted itself. Go figure. I have thought about doing the band adjustments but if its not broke don't fix it. However, I am wondering how it relates to maintenance? Anything I should look out for due to lack of band adjustment? Apologies for the long post.
-Matt

Message: I have a Haynes manual for my truck. It said to torque the adjusting screw to 72 inch pounds, then turn it out 4 turns.
I talked to a dude that rebuilds trans for the local Dodge dealership, and he said that was what they originally did, but had a lot of issues with shifting. He said they go 2 1/2 turns out now.
My trans was shot to begin with. it had been acting up for some time.
