Subject: HELP KNOCKING IP: Logged
Message: For the people that dont like reading long posts in short i have a nocking noise at idle it comes and goes but is only at idle. It gets a little faster when giving it gas but then completely goes away id say after 1500 rpms (not positive because i have no tach) but thats where im guessing. If youd like to read more on this and help read the next paragraph.
Ok i previously posted up on here that i had a knocking noise in my motor. I Thought it would be the cracked manafold which i just replaced with a brand new one. The sound almost sounded like a exhaust leak/one cylinder exhaust leak that was popping Hence why i replaced the manafold. Well after replacing that i have the noise still. Its the strangest thing. I tried replacing all the plugs (thinking its a cylinder missfireing) but not the case. While its running and i go listen at the exhuast it is running smooth with 1 or 2 miss fires (which its done since ive owned the truck)over like 20 seconds But is definitly not insinc with the knock/pop/tap noise that my motor is making. The odd thing is the noise comes and goes. If i go take a quick drive up the road then come back and pull into my drive way the noise is gone. But after letting it sit after that for like 10 mins it start it back up the noise is back. Plus If i sit and rev it a few times really qick then the noise will come back, say after i go drive up the road. If it was a bad bearing somewhere i would think the nocking would be really bad when i first start it up and its reving on choke, but that isnt the case. I cant figure out what the noise is. Plus there is no loss in power or how it accelerates. After replacing the cracked manafold i noticed it even ran better. But like i said didnt get rid of the nocking. Any imput on this would help a lot. Id like to at least narrow the possibilities down. Hope someone can help me.

Message: just a thought
how old are the plug wires?
an Arc or spark jump can cause some realy wierd sh*t
to check that engine at idle
lift the hood a bit (at night or a real dark garage) and look around for a blue spark
another thought oil filter change
with an addative i use risolone
others use sea foam
3rd how old is the timing chain?
ok i gave ya 3! LOL
lets see what the other guys think
(kinda hard without see'n & hear'n it myself)

Message: I have a 88 dakota 4x4 and had the same knocking sound you have. I thought it was the timing chain but turned out to be something in the clutch. My clutch finally went last week so I had a new one put in and the noise has gone. Not sure if you have a standard. Hope this helps

Message: ill go try the sparking idea right now. I just changed the oil thinking it would get rid of it (not like i went over though for miles) and didnt have any success. What does the risolone do? Or Sea foam. Timeing chain i believe is original. I dont think it is that because its not a rattle, and you cant define it right up in front.
Yea its not the clutch because i have an auto. Thanks for the imput on that though.
BTW i brought it to my buddies house (who knows dodges in and out) hes puzzeled by the sound. He thinks it could be a rod bearing (either the one thats at the top and connects to the piston or the one down on the crank.) Personally judging how long this noise has been kickin around and a long trip to VT and back to CT (over 400 miles) i would think it would of blown up by now. Bad way of looking at it. I mean the truck does have close to 300,000 on it im guessing that seeing how the odometer stoped 15 years ago ahah at 93,000. Might i add i would think if it was a bearing it run a little rough. I can put my hand on the air cleaner and it bairly shudders i mean a little but nothing like somethings going wrong. I mean if worse comes to worse ill end up droping another engine in for 400 bucks. Im just hopeing ill find the problem before it leads to that or it blows up<not what i want to happen.
Questions i have. If it was a bearing wouldnt i hear it as the RPMs go up, it does get faster and muffles out or goes away as i throttle up. but i would still think id hear it when im hummin along at like 35 or suttin and i dont.
Plus wouldnt if it was a bearing it would of blew up by now. I mean cruisin at 75 on the highway for 3 hours straight would make you think that suttin would go. Unless since its just gettin that much more oil when its at high revs that it wont get any worse.
sorry for such a big post but personally the more info i give you guys the better chance we can figure out this problem.

Message: sounds like a lifter tapping,a small piece of dirt in the lifter or just a bad one and/or worn rocker and shaft, both are pretty easy to fix and pretty cheap if you can do the work

Message: Ok well i confined the sound to under the truck. If you do the screw driver test (same idea as useing the stethiscope) at the lowest part of my oil pain thats where the noise is. Which makes me think its a crank or rod bearing...Ive brought it to several people and they jump between those 2 things. Thing that confuses me is the noise goes a certain amount of RPM which makes me think if its a bearing the force of it spinning makes it fall back into place.
What i still dont understand is if it was a bearing after doing a 400 mile trip with it you would think it would let go and blow?
I also have really high oil presure? Could the oil pump create this sound? is the oil pump at the lowest point in the oil pan? Does anyone have the skimatics for a 3.9 pre mag online that i could look at?
Thing that blows is now i gotta either do a full engine rebuild or just swap it out with a junkyard one. IM gonna try and put some additives, becuase the noise is completely gone if you run it easy and then stop (really covered in oil type of idea)so maybe some thicker oil or synthetic stuff from lucas just might help. I mean i know it wont hurt.
Anyone know how hard it is to swap the motor? I have a lift i can use and stuff so it shouldnt be to hard right?
