Message: I have a 2002 Quad Cab that I bought in November. I really like the truck, though I would think that I might get better mileage with a 6 cyl,(about 15, part highway, part backroads).
My question is about my tranny. It seems to need to downshift a lot, and takes its time upshifting. On the highway, rolling at about 65, I start up a grade, not serious, but certainly enough to lose speed, and it slows down to about 58 (without any movement on the accelerator) before it will jump down, and then it really revs up. Sometimes I have to put my foot into it a bit, for it to kick down. Normal behavior for a DD 6 cyl?

Message: for such a heavy truck with the 6 and auto trans it's gonna downshift. you could change your gear ratio.

Message: You might be looking at an early warning you'll lose the o/d. I assume it has o/d. My 90 did the same thing. Mine started to drop out going up really slight grades once in a while. Shortly thereafter, it did it all the time. Now I have no o/d and think it's the solenoid.

Message: Mine is also an '02. With mine, it was downshifting on the least little grade, which was just downright aggravating. After I put a Fastman throttle body on it, it got a little better. Now, if I know that I'm going to be hitting a lot of hills, I just take the cruise off and use the foot for the gas. I don't mind if it slows up a bit, as long as it doesn't downshift. The particularly aggravating thing was that it wouldn't downshift just one gear - it'd go back 2, which was unnecessary and burned a lot of gas for nothing.

Message: you could do a few things to correct some of this. first thing that you could do is check the adjustment on your tv cable. this will change the kickdown point of the transmission. you could also do the tps mod. with the mods that i have done to my truck, it will power up hills without downshifting now. i dont have a link to the tips and tricks page that tells how to do these mods, so if anyone does, post it on here.
GET IN, SIT DOWN, SHUTUP, AND HOLD ON custom 48mm tb, tps @ .768, relocated IAT, 180 t-stat, autolite double platinum, taylor wires, flowmaster 40 delta flow single in/dual out, CAI, superchips tuner
