Subject: Gas gauge works sometimes
IP: Logged

Message:
My gas gauge works most of the time but there's sometimes where it doesn't come off of E even when I have a 1/4 tank or a little more. If I drive it and make a couple stops then it will go back to working right. Seems to happen more when I get a little below 1/4 tank but not always. Any ideas on what it might be??

The contacts of the sender are dirty.
Mine got messed up by Shell gas..
Best thing is "just deal with it" and forget it..
Only way otherwise is to totally replace
Fuel Pump and Sender Assembly
= over $ 300.00 for 98
Plus labour

Wow, for $300 bucks I can do alot to the truck. Guess I'll just forget about it because it works for now and I go by mileage not by the gauge anyways.

my truck does the same thing, im a fairley good machanic, but i asked my dad and he said it is the fuel sending unit, he asked a macanic (real one) and he said drain the taink and replace the sending unit inside the tank. shudent be too hard! i havent done it yet but i beleve him. good luck if any thing $300 can buy more than a sending unit.

All you have to do is replace the sending unit, not the entire fuel pump. Mine did the exact same thing. Got the sending unit from my local Dodge dealer for $40.

I read a post a year ago that a guy took the sending unit apart and cleaned the contacts with an eraser and bent one leg of it slightly to make more pressure. Said it worked like a charm.
