Subject: V6 towing; stock bumper... IP: Logged
Message: Hey all. I need to move a car. It is a 1990 civic hatchback, probably a 2000 pound car and i'll also need to support a trailer which would be anywhere from 400-600 pounds. I want to know if it's a good idea to use the original bumper and ball hitch to do this with. The gross tow weight specified on the bumper says 2000lbs. According to that, it's not a good idea but has anyone towed a vehicle with the factory bumper?

Message: Not just no, but hell no. I have a POS fiberglass boat and a trailer and have alredy jacked my bumper up. I ended up getting a hidden hitch and a roll pan. You will tear up your bumper. Good luck.

Message: Think about what you are asking. If it says 2000 lbs. limit on the bumper don't you think thats all it can handle? What the heck, go for it and tell us how it went, you will only loose the rice mobile, just make sure it doesn't run into any oncoming cars and kill anyone.

Message: I had to use my Dak (bumper hitch + tow dolly) to tow my mom's Focus wagon (~3000lbs) about 110 miles - her ignition system freaked out on the highway during a trip, & not having AAA, we couldn't afford the tow. Damn near tore the ball out of the bumper, which is pretty much FUBAR'd now (I'm replacing it shortly with a roll pan & and frame hitch). For what the local tow companies were charging for a long-distance tow, I still came out on top $$$-wise, but I wouldn't recommend exceeding the bumper hitch's recommendations for max weight (1500lbs towing, 200lbs max tonque weight if I remember right). Hope this helps.

Message: Why not just spring for a proper hitch kit? It'll cost ya bout the same amount as a new bumper...

Message: Yea I wasn't thinking it was a good idea... I was just wondering if anyone has done it successfully. Since my last post I bought a hitch kit and installed it. It was a pain in the arse to install. Drilling and plasma cutting were necessary. Universal my arse. Thanks guys.

Message: that's why they call it universal. YOU have to make it fit your application. one made especially for a dak would have been much easier to install.
