May be the timing chain.

ping or more like a rattle?

if it's a rattle more then likely the timing chain and if it's never been changed 150,000
is pushing it theres guys on here with more milage saying they never had a prob.
but we had one with 140,000 and the chain went and bent valves and other damage
i have a 94 with 121,000 i changed the chain
& added a tensioner 2 week ago and i was amazed
it never let go! the chain was so slack
i could squeeze it in the middle and damn near get both sides to touch,

locate that sound, pin it down and if its the chain save your motor and alot of trouble ahead
and change it soon as you can,,,,,

It would not be true detonation or pre-ignition "pinging" at idle. This effect only occurs at RPM under load, usually under throttle transition.

It could also be the fuel injectors. My injectors were loud when I brought my Dakota in for service when I first bought it. The service mgr said it was normal, and that was about 80k miles ago.
