Subject: swapping magnum 318 with premag 3.9L IP: Logged
Message: I have a few questions about putting a 318 into my 91 dakota ext. cab that presently has a 3.9 in it. How big of a job is it to put a Magnum 318 in? My v6 has a throttle body on it and from the info that i gathered, a Magnum has multi-port injection. Will i have to do alot of rewiring? I believe a Magnum computer will have to be installed to go with the engine. Anyone have any info that could help me out? Thanks

Message: Why would you wanna swap out a motor on that old of a Dak. For the amount that you would pay you could just put a down payment on a newer Dak with the 318 or even an R/T. The only way I would say this was a good idea is if you were in love with the truck or you got the motor for an amazing low price. If you really want to do it then yes you will have some computer parts to deal with especially if it is out of a newer Dak it all depends on what year the motor is. As for wiring that is going to be a bitch because you are probably going to want to use all new wires unless yours are in great shape either way unless you are have a very good amount of wiring knowledge I would consider getting it done by a pro because on wrong wire and your going to want to drive that DAk off a cliff. Either way it's a good project but I just dont see the point of doing this on that year Dak. Good Luck.

Message: you could use a intake [tbi] off a 88-91 318[5.2] and save yourself some wiring issues,
you,ll need to drill and tap the heads for the intake to bolt on,
your 3.9 tb is the same as a 5.2 with smaller injectors and will bolt to the intake and work fine,
you then can change the 2 injectors to the 5.2 or 5.9 injectors and/or tb
you,ll want to change the pcm to a 5.2 or 5.9 premag becauce it gaves it more timing and fuel
hope this helps
if this is the way you want to go then go for it don,t listen to race my 5.9,with his type of thinking there would,nt be any classic cars on the road...

Message: i agree don't listen to race my 5.9, he's looking for the easy way, there's no pride in using a factory set-up to get a V8. do it yourself and the bask in the glory of knowing you did that and it runs better then a factory job. also vern is right again, we keep the classics going while race boy wants only new trucks that have more problems then the old ones and has to have the dealer work on it for him.

Message: You think those Daks are classics, thats the funniest thing I have ever heard. They are the ugliest trucks I have ever seen, they look like a box on wheels, and why would you say that I dont appreciate a classic come on now who in U.S. can say that they dont appreciate the old way of life with muscle cars that when you sat at the street lights would rumble and shake like it was an 9.0 earthquake. Ive done engine swaps and rewiring and let me tell you that its not a picnic and at some points your gonna ask yourself why the hell did I decide to do this. Dump the old school box and get some new lines.

Message: hey race boy, i bet your a car dealer! otherwise you wouldn't be so persistant on pushing people to buy new. also you said what it would cost would be the same as a down payment for a new one , well you still have all the other payments to make, and the insurance and plates for a new one, so 91dakto318 keep the old and it's already paid for and cheaper on plates and insurance, so spend some money and time, do the swap you'll be glad you did.
