Hello everyone, I have a question. My 2000 Dodge Dakota will not start, or, rather, it seems to almost start and die or start and then immediately die, can't really tell which. When I give it gas while I'm turning the ignition, it seems as if it's going to work, but as soon as I let off the gas, it dies. If I turn the key forward to turn the clock light on, the clock light flickers. I have some ideas on what it might be from doing a little research, but wanted your opinion before I take it to a mechanic. I want to be informed so that I'll have a small idea on whether he knows what he's talking about. Forgive my dumb questions -- I know nothing about vehicles, so please answer in layman's terms. Thanks!

You might want to check the battery terminals before you mess with anything else. They could be loose or corroded. I had the exact same problem on my 2000, turned out it was just a loose negative battery terminal. I cleaned it up and put a new one on, havent had a problem since.

Thank you for your help. I have some new information to post. My husband has found that if you continue to push the gas, it will start and will stay started as long as you don't let off the gas. For example, you can drive down the road as long as you are giving it gas the entire time. The minute you let off, it dies.

as stated get the battery load tested. with a weak battery, even if the alternator(sp?) is working properly, the PCM will do weird things. if the battery passes a load test then, look at giving the TB a good cleaning.

Thanks. We are going to test it. He tried some other things before I saw your earlier post, and they didn't work. If he can't get it fixed tomorrow, we will take it to a mechanic on Monday.

Battery was it!! I have had a dead battery before and this sounded and acted completely different, but I guess it can do different things/have different sounds. Thanks! Cost of fixing this problem turned out loads better than I thought it would.

What was going on was that the PCM is sensitive to low voltage; forgetting the idle will often be one of the first signs of a bad battery for our Daks. It's common to have to hold the revs up a bit even with the new battery while it relearns. Glad to hear you're all set now.
