Subject: 3.9 Over-revs IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I've got a 98 Dakota with the 3.9 v6. I've been experiencing an issue where anytime the truck's been sitting for a while (maybe 12+ hours), when you first get in and start it up, regardless of whether you give it time to warm up or not, it will seriously over-rev. Seems like it runs in 1st or 2nd gear for at least a mile before it finally shifts up. Once it finally shifts up, the problem stays gone until the next time its sat for awhile, but I'm afraid it could be an indication of a bigger problem.
Any ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Message: Brodie,
I think I know what you are talking about. While driving, instead of the truck shifting at lets say, 3,000 rpms so the next gear, unuually 2nd, it may whine-out till about 4,000 rpms? I have that problems personally. I have reprogrammed the PCM and believe that it has something to do with that. How many miles do you have on your truck. It could also be the TPS, that controlls when the truck is told to shift.

Message: The truck has 103,000 miles on it. Matt, that does sound like the issue I'm having.
I've had the fluid replaced, but no adjustments have been made that I'm aware of.

Message: I previously had a 1996 Dodge Ram sport with a 5.9L and it to would do the same exact thing untill the tranny went out. I would recommend getting looked at by a transmission repair shop or go to the Dealer, Because a rebuilt tranny is not cheap and it is very frustraiting

Message: My 2000 3.9 was doing the same thing, it would shift fine from 1-2 but from 2-3 it revved to 3500-4000rpm. There is a solution to thios, I was told that there is a transmission seal update, the stock seal does not work well until it is warmed up. This is not me talking it is my local Mopar freak mechanic
