Subject: Emissions Testing IP: Logged
Message: I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to better my chances of passing my upcoming emissions test. I've heard from people to put high grade gas in the tank and drive it on the highway, or anything over 80kms/hr for 20 minutes (just b4 testing time) to clean out the something (can't remember what it is though). Any thoughts on this? What about a tune up? I'm not sure how it works in the US, but in Canada if you fail you must fix the problem, upto a max. of $200 in order to get a "conditional pass". If in 2 yrs you retest and fail, you basically have to re-gut the vehicle, or it's off the road. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance guys! :)

Message: Same rules in the U.S. (or at least in Massachusetts).
Higher-octane gas will not help at all, in fact it may increase HC emissions. Use the lowest grade that prevents pinging.
Tuneup is common-sense mandatory before emissions testing. Make sure you drive about 10 miles just before the test to get the engine really warm so as to minimize emissions.
