I know when a battery goes dead that hooking up some cables and jump starting the truck will work, but will jumpstarting work if the alternator is failing??

probably not. if the battery is weak and the alt is not putting out then there would be no power to run anything. also, sometimes if the battery has a bad cell, you can't even jump start it.

The lights and radio work fine, but there just does not appear to be enough juice to turn over the motor. I get one click, then nothing. I put jumber cables on it and was able to start it that way.

Could be bad or weak
alternator
starter
battery

Or dirty, corroded wires and connections.

Go to Advance Auto to test the parts.
