Message: I have a 1995 dodge dakota and was wondering how I could tell if it is a magnum engine or not, I don't really know that much about the engine but am planning on fixing mine up soon. Any advise would be good. thanx in advance.

Message: Magnum engines came out in 1992, so if yours is the original engine, it's a Magnum. They have multiport fuel injection instead of throttle body, a reworked valvetrain and 180 hp instead of 125.

Message: The 96's and above have 175 HP. How many miles are on the engine? Are you planning on doing a tune-up or a rebuild? With a 95, I would do a rebuild (rering, new main/rod bearings, new oil/water pump, new seals, gaskets and freeze plugs, new timing chain/sprockets, radiator and bypass hoses, and new valve seats) While doing this, check all your clearances and specs i.e. bores, journals for the crank/cam, valve guides, valve margins, springs, and lifters, etc. If you don't want to do the rebuild, I would recommend changing the timing chain/sprockets, new plenum pan gasket and gaskets for the intake mainfold, plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, new radiator/bypass hoses(along with a good cooling flush), and while you're at it, an engine flush. What ever you do, Good Luck!!
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
