My truck is a 91 Dakota with a million miles on it. Its also a 5 speed. I drove it to the gas station last night and shut if off. I got done filling up and went to start the truck and I can't turn the key. So I take the key out and try to put it back in and I can't get it to go back in, after awhile I get it back in there and still can't turn the key. I tried slightly turning the steering wheel and turning the key and that didn't work. And yes I have the clutch pushed in too. Anyone have any ideas?

If you have another key for the truck you might try it as the one you were using maybe worn to the point it does not have the proper peaks to move the ignition plates. If you have no other key have one made at the local hardware store.

Well the key wasn't the issue apparently. So I'm guessing something broke in the ignition. I go to remove it and I find that you need some damn torx security bits to get the screws out. Anyong have any idea how much a new ignition costs? thanks Paul

Does anyone know how to remove the ignition cylinder? I have 3 or 4 of the bigger security torx screws off but still can't get it out. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!

I had the same problem recently. I was stranded in the Lowe's parking lot for an hour without any tools. I broke the cowl off the steering column and got a short piece of 12 gauge wire and, with the key in the on position, jumped the red wire (far right) to the yellow wire(far left ) in the large wire harness coupling attached to the ignition switch that is attached with the security torx bolts. That did the trick.
Later,I bought the torx gear ($40.oo), and ignition switch ($38.00) and discovered that the problem was at the bottom of the key cylinder. A cheap chunck of white metal broke off. I sent for the cylinder ($60.00) which comes with two keys and installed all the new parts; my truck still does not start with the new key. I think it is a computer reset problem? In any event, I wired a toggle switch in my original jump wire, bored a corresponding hole in the cowl, and now I have to turn the key to the on positon and toggle the switch briefly to start er' up.
Good luck!
