Subject: 85 dakota 3.9 IP: Logged
Message: I drove my pickup in to my shop and put new valve cover gaskets on and changed the plug wires. I mixed up two plug wires and when I started it it back fired, so I re changed and it starts fine but there is a poping sound and when I put it in gear (automatic trans) it lacks power and dies. When it backfired did it blow the diaphram in the carb? Or, what wrong.
Thanks

Message: first of all if your truck is an 85 it's not a dakota, 87 was the first year they started making dakotas, unless i'm wrong. the prob your having could be with the carb, maybe got some dirt plugging the jets, clean it out and try it.
