Subject: Noisy Fuel Injectors IP: Logged
Message: I bought my 01' Dakota CC 4x4 3.9L about 5 months ago with a tick in it. I thought I needed a timing chain until i got under the hood today with a nice long rod. Timing chain area silent. So I was searching around only to find out my ticking was from my fuel injectors. Is this normal, and if I ever upgraded to better fuel injectors would this quiet the ticking??
During the weekend I also installed a brass cap and rotor and new Bosch plug wires with the autolite 3923s. Stopped all my pinging so I moved the crank sensor which i modified a couple months ago (had to put it back to stock because of server pinging)back to the modified position and it didnt cause any kind of ping. I didnt drive it a whole lot yet but I'm hoping for a lil more power.
Got 4 new Firestone Destination A/T 265/70R16 over the weekend too and a set of polished SS tips for my dual exhaust...Been nice and busy but the truck is coming together. Just thought I would share.

Message: I have a 1994.
Once I removed the stock fan/clutch and installed an electric fan, I could hear all kinds of noises.
And yes, the injectors are really noisy, especially when you listen to them with a stethoscope.

Message: I had another question about the injectors that I forgot to post. Is there any advantage going with an aftermaket injector, or would I just be wasting my money on something that really wouldnt do a whole lot? Thanks

Message: the ones you have should be fine. if they are red colored, then they are the 21# so there is no need in upgrading unless you are planning forced induction or major internal motor work.

Message: Ping is evil. That is pinging under load, detonation also called pre-ignition. The BRAAAAT sound you hear pushing your foot into it under load, like uphill. Clicking noises under the hood at idle are a different story.
To solve for ping perform above mentioned brass cap/rotor, Autolites and wires if needed. Then change the thermostat to 180 degrees. It tricks the computer into thinking it's not warmed up so she runs a little richer and way cooler. Run mid grade fuel in the summer, low grade in the winter. Bye-Bye ping!

Message: If you have clattering metallic ping as described you should correct it quickly. The cylinder is firing early on the upstroke before reaching the top of the stroke where the explosion force should occur. It's like pounding your pistons with a hammer. Not good.
Ping can cause excessive wear or perhaps early death to your engine. The 3.9 is known for their pinging issue as designed to run hot and lean for emissions purposes. A few tweaks and it can be cured. Fix it don't kill it.

Message: While on the topic of pinging, don't forget to check intake manifold for vacuum leak!!! Common problem on 3.9, 5.2, & 5.9 magnum engines lower intake gasket. Simply unplug pcv valve from rocker cover, and remove air inlet hose connected to opposite rocker cover. Block pcv grommet with finger and with other hand block hose end. With engine running, normal crankcase pressure should build within engine. If vacuum leak present, you with notice vacuum! Easy.
