Subject: water pump replacement

Message:
I was told by a shop that I need a new water pump for my 98 dakota 3.9. I will probably do the job myself. Are there any special tools, etc. that I will need? The pump is noisy, sounds like a bad bearing. However the truck is not running hot nor is the pump leaking. Autozone lists the pump with the pulley attached. Should I buy the new pump with the pulley attached or remove the old one? Also, what is the heater bypass tube that they list? Thanx for any advise u can give me.

You may need a special tool to remove the fan/fan clutch assembly from the water pump, other than that the only special tool needed is patience:) The bypass hose is about 4-5 inches long and about an inch in diameter. It runs from the bypass port on the intake manifold to the bypass port on the water pump. When replacing the water pump, it is a good idea to replace all 3 of the coolant hoses (upper, lower, bypass) It is personal preference on whether to get the pump with the pulley or without, I got the one with the pulley. I hope this answered your question. Good luck!!

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

And while you have it all apart, you might want to install an electric fan and discard the fan/clutch.

That bypass hose is under the bracket for the AC compressor and alternator.

are you sure that noise isn't coming from the idler or tensioner? i'd make sure before changing the waterpump. especially if the pumps not leaking and the pulley isn't wobbling around.

Daddio, how do I check the tensioner? The truck is not running hot & the pump is not leaking. But, the noise is coming from the water pump area. I'll have to check the pulley. Thank for the replies.

I forgot to mention that the noise gets worse as the truck accelerates. It's sounds like a bad bearing in the pump but I'm not sure.

i'd take the belt off and spin the idler & tensioner pulleys. also check them for play. the pulleys shouldn't have any free play side to side.

Maybe the infamous bad timing chain. Usually a noisy water pump will overheat or leak. Has the timing chain ever been changed?

to check if its your belt tensioner pulley, spray some WD-40 on it, and then go drive around to see of the noise is still there.

Pop the serpentine belt off and check the tensioner and water pump for rumble wobble. I replaced my tensioner pulley once and then relubricated the old one and put it on when the replacement one started to squeak.

My water pump bearings went bad and I replaced it before it leaked. When it leaks, you are too close to trouble. While you are there, put some grease in the idler pulley. Use WD40 for testing but not as a lubricant, because it does not last. Use a good bearing grease and get push it into the ball bearings. New idler pulleys are inexpensive. Maybe $10 at Autozone? ?

Serpentine belt comes of easily. Put a socket on the bolt for the tensioner and then use your breaker bar to rotate the socket and tensioner toward the engine. Belt will be loose and can be slipped off of one of the pulleys. When putting serpentine belt back on, check that it is properly aligned in the notched pulleys.

Best of luck.

I sprayed some pbblaster on the tensioner but it did no good. No, the timing chain has never been changed. The truck goes in the shop Fri. to have it checked over. Thanx.

I have a 2K 3.9l and have replaced the water pump, tensioner, and T-stat. All items are inexpensive and a good investment to replace now.

The OEM tensioner is crap, the newer replacement from your local Shucks or NAPA are more beefy. I paid $28.00 for mine.

As for the T-stat, stay away from the Prestone Generation II. Go to the dealer or insist on OEM from the parts store. The GenII stats that the parts stores are pushing bottom out on the water jacket. This will cause you to over heat, and put you in a generally bad disposition. Keep your old T-stat and compair it to the New T-stat.

The water pump: I bought a new vurses a remanufactured. But without pully. On the pully hub are four (4) 10mm nuts, remove those and the fan and pully come right off. Before going any further I would suggest taking off the AC / Alternator Rack. (4 bolts to remove the AC unit, it will sit nicely on the valve cover while you are replacing the water pump.) With the rack out of the way, you have a good view of the water pump. The bolts are different lengths, so be sure to make a template so they don't get mixed up. Have a good gasket scraper and a quailty gasket. Should take about 3 hours ( or 4 beers).

The biggest probelm I had was draining the coolant system, and recovering the coolant. I have a 7 gal coolant pan, but my draincock was plugged so pulled the bottom hose.

In your water pump kit should be an O-ring for the metal bypass tube. The tube just slips in. Be sure to replace the O-ring and put a little antisieze or grease on it to allow easier insertion.

Did not need amy major tools, just a decent mechanical book and Saturday afternoon.

Good Luck,
Mike

Bought thermostats at Autozone and Pep Boys - Stant and Robertshaw brand; neither one did this. Sounds like you got the wrong part, not the wrong brand.
