Subject: Caliper pins - thread stripped
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anybody else had a problem with their caliper pins stipping the threads out of the steering knuckle? I have replaced both passenger side pins with the oversized self-tapping pins. Dodge has a TSB for the problem, but all they said was that they would sell me the new part to fix it. Are there any high quality steering knuckles available that somebody could recommend?
Thanks,
Brian

I have a 1997 Dakota v6 5spd 4x4 with the same problem. Now my rotors are warped. Dealer sais under that TSB, they just put a hela coil in to fix problem. I think thats pretty lame.

I have or had the same problem but I fixed it 2 days ago, I also had to buy self taping bolts and the top one went in fine but the bottom was hard as hell to get in, it was on the right side, I was going to get the helacoil but then i found these bolts wich were 13.99 each, but I got it fixed. Good luck.

$13.99 is a good price. I got mine at NAPA for $22/each. The only problem with using the self-taping pins is that the threads become very weak. It's only a matter of time before the threads disappear again. Then I'll need to replace the steering knuckle or use helicoils.

Yep, been there... In my case the dealership did it... when I did my brakes at 15k, removing the pins removed all the threads (they used a airtool to put pins in!). Had both fronts replaced.
I now do my own brakes, and make sure I use 'break free' to eliminate any problems.

I know this is an OLD thread...

Just had this same problem and looking for help...

The delaer stripped one of mine years back and useda helicoil..well, that helicoil failed.

So, I wanted to add a new one, but cant seem to find the right size...the caliper bolt seems to be a 3/8-20 but helicoil kits only come in 3/8-16 and 3/8-24..

Any ideas...anyone??? I'm desperate.

Yep...I found that out the other day elsewhere....

WHat a WEIRD size.....very tough to find the proper sized Helicoil...but I did...all fixed now.....

I hated having to spend $30 for a whole kit....well, I guess I have spares for when the others strip...

Wow, exact same problem with the threads stripped. I was not aware of self tapping pins. I have already bought the pins, so I will go with the Helicoils. I have stopped at several shops trying to identify the threads for the pins. Very difficult indeed. This board has proved my most useful sorce of information on the matter. Thank you...Now I just have to find a place that sells the 9 x 1.25 Helicoils.

IMNSHO, Heli's suck. Fix it right and use a Time-Sert. You'll never have to fix it again.

My 98 did the same thing. Best thing ive found it a heli-coil. Just drill the hole out, re-tap it bigger, insert heil-coil and your done. Did this 3 years ago with no problems to date

take it from a machine shop owner,
"hela coil"
actually it is HELI COIL a trademarked name and product.
and it is made out of 303 stainless which is a lot STRONGER and wear resistant and rust proof then the 1050 steel that the rest of the part is made out of. therefore it is a better fix then replacing it.

Can anyone tell me the size and thread count of the caliper pin for a 2002 dodge dakota. I need to purchase a heli coil kit and I do not know which one.

I have a 2000 Dakota sport 4.7V8 4WD. I replaced the
pads and rotors but the caliper mounting pins would
not screw back in as far as they had originally
been. I stripped the 2 on the passenger side but
they are all the way in. Is it safe to drive for a
while as is? anyone know what size bolts I need?
Also, what is the little leaf spring that clips onto
the exterior of the caliper and is it necessary?
Thanks

When you say stripped, are they very tightly set or are they loose?

I would fix it before driving if there is any chance they are loose enough to back out.

The calipers travel on the pins. A pin falls out, the caliper can be compromised.

They are in as far as they would go and are turning in place, so yes,
loose.
I now know I have to replace the two passenger pins but I don't
know why all of the pins on both sides wouldn't screw in to their
original depths.

Problem with the timesert could be that it has a flange on the top. I don't know if that flange would cause a inteference problem with the caliper. Need to check. Key locking inserts are a better alternative, as they lock securely in place, but are flush or just slightly below the surface. Look at McMaster.com.

I have a 2002 dodge dakota 4.7 . I have had one
pin stripped ( had garage do brakes and they
did this) I was changing brakes and saw this
and put an oversized caliper bolt in it and it was
nice and tight. Now while changing out brake
line that runs to rear I saw same caliper bolt
loose. It has maybe 2 threads at end left. Now I
need to use a heli coil but not sure what size to
use. The hole is much bigger now since I had to
use an oversized bolt in it. Can anyone give me
some help here pkease
