I have a 2002 dodge dakota 4.7 . I have had one
pin stripped ( had garage do brakes and they
did this) I was changing brakes and saw this
and put an oversized caliper bolt in it and it was
nice and tight. Now while changing out brake
line that runs to rear I saw same caliper bolt
loose. It has maybe 2 threads at end left. Now I
need to use a heli coil but not sure what size to
use. The hole is much bigger now since I had to
use an oversized bolt in it. Can anyone give me
some help here pkease

If you can not figure out what heli coil you need you should not try the repair yourself.

We can't tell you what size because we do not know the size of the hole that is now there instead of threads.

I have a 2002 dakota 4x4 which has the same
problem. The right side stripping seems be a
common issue. I have searched for replacement
knuckle for mine and they are getting hard to
find ones that are not already stripped or had a
helicoil installed and the junk yard wanted
$125.00 just for the knuckle. Called the local
dealer and they no longer supply replacement part
for problem. I did some research by comparing
front brake parts on Rock Auto's web site of the
2000 - 2002 dakota and a 2003. The 2003 uses the
bolt on caliper bracket which then bolts onto the
knuckle. What I am seeing is that upper and lower
ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rods, rotors and
axles are all the same part numbers as the 2000 -
2002 models. The parts which would have to be
changed is the knuckle, calipers, pads and brake
lines to the calipers. I haven't tried to do a
conversion myself yet but it looks like you could
update the front brakes to a 2003 setup with a
little bit of effort. If it works it sure will
beat messing around with trying to fix the piss
poor design of the front brakes on these trucks.
Anyone who might have access to parts to try this
would be doing a lot of dakota owners a favor by
posting their results if it works.

Should just wind in with the heli supplied tool and then you
break off the tang. Should be easy.

I have spent some time looking for the parts, etc.
needed for this repair. Here is what I have found:

Raybestos has a bulletin for the repair kit -

I hope someone finds this information useful.
