Truck is a '98 3.9 automatic with 81,000 mi. I am hearing a growling/rattling noise from the tranny that seems to get worse at the shift points. Once the tranny engages into say 3rd gear, the noise quiets down. I changed the fluid/filter & found no metal, but the pan magnet was covered with a substance that looked just like never seize. Any thoughts on this ? Thanx.

There are other things that make rattling noises under your truck. The first thing I would check or have checked is your catalytic converter. When it burns out, it make a rattling sound. mostly at idle, but can continue to rattle as you pick up speed. to check it, smack it with a hammer and if it make a bunch of rattling noise, it needs to be replaced. On my 97 Dakota, I had to have mine replaced at about the same milage that you have. Hope this helps.

I agree, it sounds like you have an noise that's related to rpm (changes frequency with change in rpm). If there was a rattling noise in the trans...you would have defiantely seen metal in the pan.

Check your CAT as stevebdak said.

Not exactly the same thing, but I've got a rattle, sounds like its right under or in front of the cab. It makes a grinding sound right as I put the gas on, and going up inclines. Took it to the dealer, got the manager to ride in it and heard it. He said it was normal in RWD vehicles. He said it the gearing in the rear axle connecting to eachother or something like that. Anyway, that was about 3 or 4 months ago, and It's getting louder and louder.

If anyone knows what that might be I would appreciate it.

No,I don't think it's the cat. I had it replaced about 2 years ago. It's the tranny 'cuz sometimes it has a hard time getting into od. I'm not getting any codes & the fluid level/condition is fine. Thanx.

I'm bringing the truck in to a transmision shop tomorrow. He said he would put it on a scanner & check the pressure. I know squat about transmsions, so what type of scanner will he use? It's not throwing any codes. Is he talking about pressure in the valve body? I'll ask the guy when I bring it in but I'm just lookig for a heads up beforehand. Thanx.

I took the truck in yesterday yo have it checked. Well, it turns out that the noise is not from the tranny. The shop told me it's a faulty water pump. Boy, I could have sworn the noise was from the tranny!
