Subject: MPG on 96 CC 4X4 IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. I've been reading some of the other MPG posts and since I think alot have been dealing with newer daks, I was wondering if I could get some comments on my situation. I have a 96 CC 4X4 3.9/Auto. with 156k. It seems to be a fairly well taken care of truck. It is also the first 4x4 I have owned. I've been getting about 15 mpg or so since I got it around the first of December. I don't know how respectable this is, but what are some things a fairly mechanically inclined person can do the squeeze out a few more mpgs on a truck like this so I don't have to sell it.

Message: At 15MPG...you're not all that bad. It's a 3.9L. Yes, V6, should get better MPG...but, you're probably in the gas more than normal to get the truck moving half decently. This takes a bite outta MPG. Also, it's December. If it's cold where you are you'll certainly lose mileage. You run more on the rich side when it's cold outside.
I would recommend a K&N filtercharger and also a free-flowing exhaust...both should squeeze a couple miles outta your gallons. Also, make sure the maintenances have been done such as tune-up, fuel system services, and fluid changes.

Message: Dan - that's respectable. I just traded my 1995 SLT CC 4x4 auto 3.9L in for a 2002 QC 4x4 4.7L. The 1995 had 166k miles. Never burned any oil.
I was getting 17-18 mpg combined city and highway. I had an xtang tonneau cover, K&N filter (round one in an edelbrock open element air hat), synthetic oil (mobile 1). I kept it well maintained. Pretty much everything else was stock including the muffler. I used autolight plugs and wires, advance cap/rotor.
There was a point where i was getting at most 14. I did an engine flush and removed alot of crud from oil. Since doing that I ran seafoam in the gas, oil and throttle body at every oil change.
good luck.
