Subject: Wont start, please help IP: Logged
Message: my scan tool is reading a "P1389 manufaur control ignition system or misfire" What the hell is this. I looked in the Haynes manual and it reads "An open condition detected in the ASD relay output circuit". Please help. The truck turns over but I am not getting any fire at the coil. It is a 98 3.9 stock Dakota

Message: I did a tune up about 20,000 miles ago. Everything was replaced but the coil. Autozone tested it twice today and said it was good. I read somewhere that there is some fusible link that would go and shut off all fire and fuel. Where do I even start to look for the link. My father in law told me to look for an igition module by or under the distributor. I found this thin round plate with a couple of wires running to it that is under the cap.. Please anybody that could give more more input please do. This is my daily driver and the bike is waiting for wheel bearings. Thanks

Message: Try this. Push the accelerator to the floor while turning the engine over. That resets fuel pump relay etc. Worked on my 98 dak. Worth a shot.

Message: WOW haven't heard of this happening in a long time. Okay 2 things 1st locate the ASD=auto shut down relay. 2nd check all power going to and from the relay, if i recall correctly the power source is fusible linked and is prone to rotting out. The way it worked on the older rigs is that the power that the ECM used for the ignition and fuel was run through the ASD. You,re best bet is to obtian a schematic and diagram for you're truck through the dealership. YOU will need them.

Message: Yeah, there is the #115 splice that is very common. Check the back of haynes in the wiring diamgrams. About 8 inches or so down from the fues box under the hood is a splice. Unwrap the wiring and resolder the splice. Alot of people have done this including myself.
Also, have you checked the asd relay itself ? Is it good?
If you do a search, you'll find some better instructions. I did and that is what I followed.

Message: Alright I had it towed to Manuel Dadge in Richardson today an they said it is the connector that goes into the bottom of the Power Distribution Supply box (the fuse box on the drivers side under the hood). It will cost $180 to fix it.

Message: Sullly save yourself the money
and follow through with what Dan M said
it's a common problem on the Daks
and will only take a few minutes
you've got nothing to lose but a few minutes time
and possible gain the savings of $180.
my truck never stalled and allways started but odly started getting the check engine light
so when i went in last week and did the timing chain/ten. - water pump/hoses & Tstat
i figured it was a good time to have a look,
after un-taping the harness i found the splice
3 wires to 1 and 1 was broke off the others barely attached and all green
i cut the wires back added some new
and redid the splice,
(the light has never come on again)

Message: Was the battery load tested? That is the only way to make sure it is actually good. If so, check and clean all connections and grounds to the battery and starter. That clicking sound is most times a bad battery.
