Message: My temp guage would never go much past cold so I replaced the thermostat with a 195, now it runs at about one quarter. But my question is when I take off in the morning it will go to one half to three quarters then go back to one forth and stay there is this normal? Also when I replaced the T-stat it came out in the hose with the gasket on the outside of it, it wasn't in the engine like normal, so I put it togather like that. Is this normal?

Message: That would be not normal, as far as gauge fluctuation to mid range then settling back to 1/4.
Your second question sounds strange with a T-stat stuffed into the upper radiator hose gasket out? The bugger nests under the hose housing into a recess the loop side facing into the motor.
Some Euro cars have in-line T-stats, maybe someone thought it would work or were complete idiots. You didn't get any replies so maybe guys thought you're kidding or fishing. Always state year and engine size.

Message: I think he means that when he unbolted the thermostat housing and lifted it, the thermostat and gasket lifted up attached to the bottom of the housing, rather than remaining behind on the engine to be lifted out. That's fine, but gravity works against you in replacing it by RTV'ing it to the housing and trying to lower it back in the way it came out. Better to place the thermostat in the manifold, gasket it and then lower the housing in place.
First issue sounds like trapped air in the system. Park uphill with engine cold, take radiator cap off and turn on heater, then run engine til warm. Air should rise to the highest point, out the radiator opening.

Message: Sorry it's a 90 dakota with a 3.9. I don't want to take that thing part again, It isn't leaking or anything would it hurt to leave it like that. When I took the housing off I didn't see the T-stat then I saw it in the housing and the gasket was holding it in. Thanks in advace for the help.

Message: No one said to take it apart. Just park uphill with the radiator cap off and run the engine til warm, to burp the air out. Pockets of air left in the coolant can cause head distortion and head gasket failure if left long enough and if bubbles are big enough.
