Subject: 99 Dakota V6 Issues (ping/stutter) IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota AT with the 3.9 V6. It is about to hit 100k miles and it's been giving me some problems recently. After I went on a long trip out of town (only about 150mi) did it start this issue. The motors seems to be idling fine but every once in a while it will stutter, the RPMs would drop then it would come back up to idle speed. It did this before, I replaced the plugs and oil and it ran pretty good for a little while till I made the trip again and it started doing the same thing. I'm wondering if it's something related to fuel?
Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

fuel pump going weak !
Have you cleaned the Idle Air Control
( on back of throttle body ) ?
Also possible - O2 sensor ( just in front of cat..)

Message: Dan,
Mine used to do that up until it would happen
at a traffic light and I got it fixed. It
would kinda cough or stutter and it got worse
to the point that it died during an idle from
a complete stop. A mechanic did it for me and
said it was a fouled fuel injector. Seemed to
of fixed it. Just for mention, a year later it
started happening again and I changed the fuel
filter... . fixed it right up, almost instantly.
Now I use those marketed 'fuel injector cleaners'
just for precaution, and end up buying 91 octane
gas.
On another note but similar topic, I just got
back from a trip too where while driving in higher altitudes my engine would not ignite as
i would give it gas. (it kinda reminded me of
my engine's fuel problem like the stutter you mention) I was hours into the drive and minutes
away from the ski resort and I had to pull over.
I took off the top to my K&N air filter and looked inside. There was unburnt fuel on the filter and I traced it back to the crank case inlet hose connecting into the air filter's container. I unhooked the hose and fanned the filter to dry the left over fuel. This allowed me to get to the ski resort but only if I put it in 4WD and kept the RPMs above 2K. I be looking into this one shortly, but keep posting Dan if you find your answer. I seem to of had this problem you mention about 2 years ago and it keeps haunting me in sublte but different ways with in the fuel system. Anyways, good luck.

Message: Thanks guys for the replies. Where's the IAC on a 99 V6? I really want to replace the fuel filter, but if my research is correct, it's in the pump in the tank!?

Message: the IAC is on the back of the throttle body, and yes you have to remove fuel tank to get to the filter
