Subject: 96 dakota starts up cold and idles fine, IP: Logged
Message: however, once the engine is warm, if i cut it off i have to press the accelrator pedal to get it to crank. It will not idle. I have to rev it up and slam it into gear (auto) and continue to give it gas. After it runs in gear for a while, it will start idling fine. Is my choke sticking? Any ideas.

Message: I have at 92 v6 3.9 dakota. My problem starts when cold, but after 40 miles of highway driving, it sounds like it backfires, then stalls. After letting idle for a minute, its back running again. But it happens about every 10 miles after that. Had fuel filter, fuel pump and cat replaced. No computer codes at the dealership... anyone think it could be a pickup coil? Fried computer?

Message: This may sound a bit funny but try checking your battery and charging system. It sounds like you might be losing your adaptive fuel memory.
Also, what do you mean by, "I have to press the accelerator to get it to crank" It won't crank at all unless you push the accel.? Please explain.

Message: Tim - have you cleaned the Idle Air Control
( back of throttle body ) ?
Also it may be time for a new O2 sensor
(just in front of cat..)
92 - could be O2 sensor as well ! also as davec says and while checking - check wiring harnesses
especially under the underhood fusebox
( find splice of 3 wires about 8 inches down the harness-=- if green with corrosion -=- be sure to redo it one way or other )
Clean battery terminals and connectors - may 'look' ok , but better to clean-up = shiny..

Message: By the way, no choke on a fuel injected vehicle. Idle is controlled by the computer.

Message: Dave,
After the truck has been sitting overnite (12+ hours), I can just turn the key and it will start and idle. I have to "pat" the accel to make it start after it has run. I know that a weak battery will cause it not to idle at all. Come to think of it that battery has been in there for 3 years or better.
?,
No, I have not cleaned the IAC or changed the o2 sensor. The engine has about 230,000 miles on it. Should they be changed or cleaned?
Thanks for your responses.

Message: 230k!!!!!! mano, mano, thats alot of road.
Please open you owner's manual and make sure every scheduled service that is listed there has been done.
The throttle body and IAC most CERTAINLY need cleaned. The dirt that's in there is probably "acting" like a choke at this point.
I would also change the O2 sensors as well.
For an engine to run properly you need air, fuel, and ignition. And the correct amount of all three.
Check that battery out also!

Message: It's the distribtor gear. Dakotas are notorius for that. When it gets worn down and stripped it will over load and run rich. Thats where you get your backfiring from. Believe me. I know. I sat in the truck for an hour every morning trying to baby the gas just to get the dang thing to idle. Its not fun in 20 degree weather. And the backfiring sounds like its coming through the intake right? Check it and find out for yourselves. Good luck fellas!
