Subject: My fuel pump failed! IP: Logged
Message: I am new to this site, I own a 1999 dakota w/ the 3.9 in it. I had the fuel pump go out the other day. I was wondering if anyone had the procedure on taking it out. I know its in the tank, but I am curious if I can just drop the tank out the bottom or if I have to take the bed off. If anyone has any info on it please let me know where I can find it, or if you could post it that would be great!! Thanks
Johnny

Message: you can do either. some prefer just to take all the bed mounting bolts out and slide the bed back about 18" or so. or you can drop the tank. a real pain if it has any fuel in it. gas probably weighs about 7.5lbs per gal. when the time comes for me, no doubt i'm gonna move the bed. it needs to be aligned anyway. it's about 1/4" off center.

Message: awesome! thanks guys I just didn't want to get into something over my head. I am a motorcycle tech, and well I know bikes and quads, but cars and trucks aren't really something I like, and too knowledgeable on. Thanks for all of your info.

this is for replacing the fuel sending unit, you have to pull the pump out to replace it.
move the bed back so you can access the fuel tank, it's not a clearance issue of the tank to the bed.

YO Dan, got a new web site??

Message: My 94 3.9 s fuel pump went at 100K miles dealer wanted 550 for the job I bought the complete unit by Carter Co at NAPA for under $200 this is the same OEP that Dodge uses.I droped my tank (had no help removing the bed with a cap on it)but it should be easier if you can slide the bed back.

Message: if you havent picked up the new pump yet
some food for thought,
autozones pump asmb. has a real cheap filter
(sock style)
for just a few bucks more check out NAPA's
it has the orig. style filter on it
and i did my pump early last year
way better to pull the bed back
and when you install the new pump
it has to go in just right or your gauge is going to go screwy
(float pointing towards cab then about 1/8 turn
left or towards the drivers door)
