Subject: Tailgate Down increases DRAG!!!!!!!! IP: Logged
Message: Was watching Myth Busters and they proved this to be true. With you tailgate down your increase drag. With tailgate up less drag. I found it hard to believe untill the tested it and it was true. So less gas saved if tailgate is down. Better gas mileage if tailgate is up.

Message: It all is determined by a few different factors actually... JFH, one of the posters on here, is an aeronautical engineer (at least I think it's JFH...if it's someone else, feel free to correct me) and has tested some different things. Depending on the speed, sometimes you get better gas mileage with the tailgate up and sometimes it's actually even better yet with the tailgate partially opened...i think about halfway open or so.

Message: Yea, I bet the truck was a SWB too. I own and drive a LWB truck. I can prove the opposite. The only way to get better gas milage on my truck with a closed tailgate is use of a tonneau cover.

Message: Actually, they were Ford F-Series 4-door pickups. I thought
they should have tested several different makes. Different
bodies may yield different results.

Message: I've never heard one way or another which is best for mpg, tailgate up or tailgate off the truck. did they test it on mythbusters with the tailgate off the truck or just in the down position?

Message: Current state-of-the-art says tailgate off is even worse than tailgate down. This is NOT new information folks. Mythbusters just confirmed already well-documented science - if they did even five minutes of research then they knew what to expect. Hell, even Lockheed Aircraft has done wind tunnel testing on trucks to the same effect.

Message: My bed liner actually peels up and forms a sort of bubble on the interestate if my gate is up...so if the wing pushing against my tailgate is strong enough to pull up on my bedliner...i imagine its causing alot of drag....The only thing i can think of is my truck feels like it drives more.."normal" with the gate up...probably a computer thing.
