Subject: Pass CA Smog IP: Logged
Message: I had a real hard time getting my 1997 3.9 to pass smog in CA. Since they went to the treadmill testing it would not pass under load.
After 6 months of dealers, test centers, smog referees (all of which could not figure it out) and an offer from the State to give me $1,000 fo the vehicle, I finally found someone who figured it out. It was the fuel pump in the tank. It was not delivering the fuel needed and the computer was compensating by running rich. If you have this problem, check your fuel pump.

Message: Yeah, that's the government's solution to a problem - "Let's not take the time and effort needed to actually identify and solve the problem. Let's buy the problem for a lowball price and crush it. See, we are cleaning up the air!"
If they offered fair market value it would at least be a viable solution for the vehicle owner. Their "generosity" makes it less than desirable.
