Hi,
How hard is it to remove the bolts/studs from the exhaust manifold?
Thet don't look that good.
The dealer had to drill and tap 4 studs on the passenger side manifold because one bolthead popped off.
Thanks
Jon

Hay it is fairly easy but you said 4 studs on one side, I dont think there is 4, im pretty sure there are only 3 studs last i checked, Well anyhow, how much did they charge you to drill and tap them, i have 2 on the pasenger side that are broken, the pasenger side is the harder one to mess with, the other side is fairly easy to do, goodluck.

I have a 1990 V6. I have 2 boltz and 2 studs on eacxh side. They were a pain in the azz too. When I put my edelb. headers on, I busted off on of the studs, bent another, and got all 4 bolts out ok. Just use lots of liquid wrench a few day before.

Id like to know about the $$$ too. I paid my mechanic $60. to tap out all the pass boltz and studs, replace the gasket with very high temp mat., and reinstall the header with ARP boltz. It works great. No problems yet and its been nearly 2 years.
Good Luck

Yep, two studs per side. As mentioned, use lots of liquid wrench or wd-40 & DON'T FORCE THEM! Use two nuts on the stud, jam one against the other & carefully back them out.

Actually, the hardest part of replacing the headers (for me, anyway) was installing the new ones. Well, not hard, just tedious...there are three bolts (one on the passenger side, two on the driver) on the JBA headers that are damn hard to get to because of the way the tubes run.

The removal and instal was easy. I have a 1999 dakota 3.9 and it had about 130,000 miles before i put the headers on. I just went to Kragen and bought some liquid penetrator. I don't remember the name but its has a wierd orange kind of smell to it. On a side not if you let the stuff sit in a foam cup it eats it away instantly. Anyhow, the bolts were hard as hell to get off so i put some of that stuff on it and let it sit over night. The next morning i was able to take almost all the bolts off with my hands. That stuff reallt gets in there and makes it easy.

I know what you guys are talkin about. The edelbrock shorty headers have some wierd tubes going all over the place. Ive even had people ask me if i made them up myself. UH NO...
But I had some concoction of like 4 extensions to my ratchet all hooked together to get in some of those holes. Nuts. That why after I blew the 1 gasket, I took it to my friend, also a mech. and let him hit it with a slim air wrench.

Good luck to all of you.

I wish mine went as easy as yours went, waterpolo. I had to drill out 2 broken studs, that were already broken since I owned it, than ofcourse a friend of mine from work tried to take it out with an easy out. Easy out broke off! All I could do was to use a do-all to burn out the easy out. Then there was the Heli-coil thing afterwards. But after it's all said and done I'm pretty happy it's done now. :-) Get back to me on any get togethers.

Wouldn't want any other!

Heat them up with a torch they will come out with a stud extractor as easy as if it was a brand new bolt. If i had to drill them out i would probably charge about 2 hours labor. If i broke my own i would say screw it and tack weld a new stud to the end of the old one.

This is why I put headers on my truck at 800 miles. Manifolds and studs came out slicker than a whistle! I think that if Dodge would just put gaskets on the manifolds, there wouldn't be so much stud breakage.
