Subject: Cold idle problems IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dak, this has just started over the week end. We are having mildy cold weather, 28 degree mornings. When I start the truck the tach will bob around 500 and 700 then die. I have to keep my foot on the gas until the truck warms up then it will idle real nice at 650 rpm. I have checked indicator light on my battery, still green but it is the OEM battery. Has plenty of cranking power and catches on the first try. I had a recomendation to check a vacuum solinoid that connects to the throttle body. Anyway I am stumped. Any suggestions?
Thx Mike

Message: you probably need to clean the IAC(idle air control). it's on the back of the TB. just be careful not to push or turn the plunger on it.
you may also want to get your battery load tested. or at least clean all the connections. a weak battery will do that also.

Message: is there a site that give a good representation of the IAC (idle air control) and it related components? The maintenance manual I have for the my truck is just about worthless.
Thanks for the info, I'll be looking into that tonight.

Message: I inspected the IAC last night, and it was certaily crustified. Cleaned it up and the cold idle problem is gone. :-) I will clean the whole TB this weekend just for good measure.
Thanks again for your help.

Message: I had the same problem with my 99 3.9 V6. You have a vacuum leak. Get it fixed and it will run better than the day you bought it. Just got mine back today, runs great. Hope I helped.
