Subject: Automatic Transmission IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I have a 96 Dakota. 3.9L V-6 Automatic 117K miles. The problem is that it that the engine revs up over 3000 rpms to change into the next gear when cold. When it is warm it shifts perfectly. I have not had the tranny fluid serviced since 99' at 60K. Any ideas as to what i should check? Thanks for your input.

Message: I have the same problem, even after a fluid/filter change at around 55k miles (around 62k now)...I'd say you're bout due up for another fluid/filter change. Also should prolly see bout having your bands adjusted back to specs. Dunno if that'll fix your problem or not...but it's a good idea nonetheless and very well COULD fix the problem.

Message: in neutral the fluid is circulating as it would while operating. in park it shows a higher amount of fluid in the pan than what should be the operating amount. so if you just checked it in park, it might look full, but when you drop it in gear it could be too low.

Message: That's why on several transmission posts I've asked if the fluid was checked in park.
as a side note, if you have an alldata subscription, they have some nice fluid diagrams illustrating this.

Message: Same problem larry Dads had his 97 since new and around 70,000 the trani. problems started. spools up between 1st and 2nd gear upshift 3000rpm+ cold and around 2400rpm warmed up yes iv,e tried the flush, filter, band adjustment and tv cable re-adjust to very little avail. What senser exactly is it that gets mucked up and where on this trani is it located? i have heard it's sometimes just a matter of pulling it out cleaning and re-installing it. What else would you recommend doing.

Message: Just for everyone to chew on...Dodge recommends a fluid change for the tranny every 30000 miles. It's a lot like engine oil, it will last longer than that, but won't protect nearly as well. It starts to break down and get burned up, if your fluid isn't a vibrant red color, you may want to get it serviced. And if you can, have a power-flush done. The filter is just a wire mesh screen so if a back flush is done (most power-flush's are) it will completely clean the filter, no need to replace, and the flush will remove more of the old fluid.
That's my 2 cents, take it or leave it.

Message: had the same problem with mine. A buddy who owns his own shop said that he sees this all the time in the Dodge trannys - especially when the weather turns cold. He said that the seals are getting hard and told me to put 6-8 oz. of brake fluid in it. So, I tried it and it shifts like a new transmission now. Give it a try. The brake fluid will soften up the seals.

Message: Try using one or two bottles of Lucas Transmission Slip Fix. You will have to remove about a quart or two of fluid, unless you are already low. Better yet do a fluid/ filter change and a Band/ Kickdown Cable adjustment. Also, check your throttle positions for specified alignment.
I used Lucas and did all the above (use ATF+4 or AMS synthetic fluid) the drain will not remove any fluid from your torque converter, so you may want to drain that, or do two changes with 200-500 miles in between (use cheap ATF+3 the first change). My truck wouldn't shift out of first at 92,000 miles until doing the above, and it has gotten me all the way to 170,000 on a '94 3.9 w/ 42re tranny (all original). Still get close to 16mpg.
