Subject: Cat Convert. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dodge Dakota, 3.9L, I was wondering if there is a way to bypass/get rid of the cat converter. I was told this would screw up the computer and make the truck run like crap... is this true? Is there a way to trick the computer?
Thanks,
Scott

Message: you will have to buy a o2 sensor. the truck will not no the right fuel to air mixture with the cat removed and the stock sensor still in place.
you will need the o2 sensor costing i think some were in the $100-$200 range. the cat is the easy part only taking a replacement pipe. welder or some pipe fittings and a couple claps.
since you will not pass smog with no cats, you will have to buy a fake or keep the old cats and sensor for a swap on smog day. got to keep the environmentalist happy. hopefully that helps.
[ and some mods to blow it up]

Message: I have already done this for my truck. All you have to do is take the post cat and zip tie it to the frame so the computer thinks the cat is working.
I did lose some low end torque at first, but high end went up. I had to take and put a small restriction in the place of the cat. I just used a 2 1/2 to 2 inch reducer and it worked perfectly!

Message: Oh that sucks! You mean I can't beat out the baffles in my Cat? It will screw up the computer? There has got to be an easier way. :-( I don't want to have to zip tie my old cat to my frame. Or buy a new sensor. Doesn't anyone have a plan C?

Message: Yeah, leave the cat in, stupid. There's no performance benefit to removing it. It is a felony (doesn't matter whether you have inspections, Scott!) punishable by a $2,500 fine.
Consider whether it's worth it to have a criminal record and not get a job, not be able to vote, not be able to carry a gun, be screened on every airline flight, etc. Is it worth the risk of getting caught? Go ahead and post back to us after you lose all those rights.

Message: So all i have to do is cut the converter out, zip tie it to the frame and put another piece of pipe in its place? That will take care of everything, no other parts/work needed?

Message: I was told if i remove the cat my gas milage will go down the drain. This is wrong right? As long as the comp thinks it is working, it should help due to leess restriction. Also, what are the chances of getting caught... it's not likely unless the cop really looks or does an O2 test at the exhaust exit true?

Message: Why would you remove the cat in the first place? If you're looking for a noticeable improvement, you're wasting your time. All you're going to do is pollute more. Doesn't "make life easier" for my family in FL, two of whom have asthma.

Message: I wouldn't think your chances of getting caught are even in the odds. At least not up here in Canada. When was the last time you saw a cop even bend over to look at your exhaust? As long as it's not really loud and your not at an illegal car ralley you should be fine. But I don't understand why you don't get a highflow Cat and just skip the mounting your old cat to your frame. If that was me I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that piece of cr*p was hanging off my truck.
I know a lot of buddies back east who just beat the baffles right out of their CAT basically making it straight through. They have to pass inspection every year and it has to be there. They never test emissions though.

Message: My dak is a 99. There is a little more than just gutting it out. After you gut it, you need to relocate the post O2 sensor so it does not trip any codes. I moved mine up to the frame so it was reading fresh air. That worked great. The next thing you have to deal with is the hole the O2 sensor came out of. I cut that section of pipe out and put in a 2 1/2 to 2 inch reducer. You will still need a little back presure and that worked perfectly! I gained 1-2 MPG and some more power from this mod.

Message: My convertor plugged up on me years ago, while on the road and I cut it out. I installed a lenth of pipe and after a month or so of no difference in how it ran I welded it in. I ran it like this for about 4 years(60-70k miles) and had no problems. I have since put a cat in because I was going to sell it, but couldn't stand to part with it. I would recommed doing something about the second O2 sensor though(whose only job is to verify the first one is working).
