how much does it weigh?
what gears do you have?
manual or auto trans?
all this makes a difference in towing capacity.

I'm pretty sure you can do it. I think a 17 footer is a single axle, not a tandem? The Dakota has a lot of fullsize drivetrain components. Do you haVe to pull any steep mountains? That would be my biggest concern.
