Subject: Fuel Economy Question
IP: Logged

Message:
The fuel economy on my 99 Dodge Dakota V6 has fallen off recently and I can't figure out why. About 3 months ago I replaced the plugs, dist cap, and rotor. It was getting about 18MPG before the tune up and about 20MPG after. Now, I'm only getting about 15-16MPG. Could I have a sensor that's going bad? Maybe the MAP sensor or an O2 sensor?

Any ideas?

Is it getting colder in your area ?
Otherwise = probable O2 sensor = the one just in front of Catalytic..

Yes, it is getting colder, but not too cold ( I live in GA). My truck does have 121K on it and I've never replace the O2 sensor. Can they just be cleaned off or should I buy a new one?

time to buy a new one. o2 sensors usually last about 70k miles before replacing. i am having the same problem with my 2000 quad cab with about 76k on it. where in georgia do you live? i live in northeast georgia myself.

I have a 97 V6 Dakota with 185K on my orginial o2 sensors. And I also live in Georgia. Back about 100k ago, my MPG went down. That is when I learned the value of removing my throttle body and the IAC valve and cleaning them. Ever sense then, I pull and clean them every 30 to 40K. I still get 18-20 mixed driving and 22 Hwy. Of course with the cooler temps, it drops a bit.
