Subject: Low Rpm 'Ping'
IP: Logged

Message:
I just replaced the 02 sensor, so I keep that in mind. but recently I noticed that going up hill, and when I have my Rpm's below the 2000 mark, my engine will slightly 'ping.' Its not bad to the point that I can't make it up the hill, but it wasn't so pronounced before I replaced the 02 sensor. To somewhat resolve the situation I normally down shift the automatic into a lower gear. Then the engine revs well with the higher Rpms, and no 'ping.' Also, it more of a 'ping' at half throttle or less, and less of a 'ping' as I give it gas. (But still 'pings'.) My only thoughts so far are that maybe the computer is now adjusting to the new 02 sensor, (even though it did slightly 'ping' before I replaced it, its just more pronounced now) maybe it has to do with the ERG valve (which I'll check today) and maybe it is related to my catalytic converter. (very old)
If those don't work, I'll try higher Octane gas and post further. Please let me know what you think.

your timing may be off. the timing chain may be worn so that slower rpms the chain has slack and at high rpms the slack is less?

and some mods to slow it down!

toolfan,

gosh. I looked into the 'how to' page on timing chains. Considering the length it took someone to write that article, i am curious how long one could expect if he was to tackle such a task by himself. (Dad might be able to help) also, if it turns out to be that something else is the problem for the 'ping', would there be a plus in there for changing the timing chain. I mean, it is probably time... 89' 185K Dakota 4x4, but is it necessary for 'preventive' maintenance? In other words, what are the consequences if I waited till winter was over (another some odd months) due to the rain, rather than acted immediately? Is it likely to cause more 'pinging' and possibly damage, or even brake? I want to cancel out all possibilites before I went ahead and changed the timing chain.
