Subject: Heater Problems????

This morning when I was taking my husband to work we noticed a weird sound coming from the front D/S of the truck, it almost sounded like it was near the side mirror. It's hard to describe, but it sounded alot like cracking ice, and only made that noise when I hit bumps (bigger the bump, louder the sound). After driving for about 15 mins, the sound was gone, but on the way home I noticed there was little to no heat. The truck wasn't cold, so the heat worked on the way there, but in the driveway, I checked the vents, and the air was barely warm. My questions are, do you think the noise we heard is related to the heat no longer working? Are there any small solutions we can try before I take it into my mech? Please help, I have a child, and people frown upon frozen children!!!Oh and another question not related to my heater. Last winter my truck would start no problem, even in -45 w/ windchill. This year, if it's -1 or colder she won't start without keeping the rpms at 1000 for about 5 mins. This defeats the purpose of warming her up while I'm in the house, especially now that I have NO HEAT!!! Is there something I can do, or might have already done, that would make her do this to me? I got an oil change the other day, and they said I need a new air filter, could this be it? I am so mechanically inept, it's not even funny...PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanx in advance guys! :)
