Subject: Torque & Tire Size Question IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking about how to improve towing with my 3.9L. It has a torque rating of 225 with the 31x10.5 tires and 3.55 gears
Would the torque go up with smaller tires? If so is there a formula or site that could give me an idea of the increase in torrque I would get with a smaller tire.

Message: cant remember the exact formula
but someone in the tech. dept of summit or jegs should be able to help you
however i can tell you without a doubt, going with smaller tires is like a lower gear ratio
dont think you'de notice a big difference with 1 size but i know 2 sizes on my old 83 ramcharger made a noticable diff.
(hope that helps)

Message: I found this calculator.
http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartire.htm
I don't understand it. If I put in a new diamiter of 34 and an old diamiter of 33 with a gear ratio of 3.55 the gear ratio on the right get better.
I'm confused.
Any explanations would be helpful.

Message: you will always have 225 ftlbs of torque unless you modify the engine. now if you go from 31" tires to 235/75 it would probably be like going from 3.55:1 to 4.10:1

Message: I have the same truck but mind has a 3.92 rear end and with the Super Chips reprogrammer, it pulls my 3800lb boat find. Try a lower gear ratio for trailer pulling.

Message: I agree with daddio. Keep your 3.55 LSD and go to the 235/75 - it's also the shortest tire you can get in a C load range (I think).
