Message: I have a 99 Dakota Sport 2 wheel drive with a 3.9 and a manual transmission. I have had a problem for awhile now after I drive the truck and it warms up and I am driving at speed and let off the gas while the truck is still in gear, the truck will start to buck like it is running out of gas. The tach needle also jumps around and if I push in the clutch or pull the truck in neutral, it will idle down fine. This problem is intermitant and doesn't happen all of the time. It seems to be worse when it is colder outside. When it has one of its fits, it usually only lasts about 1/2 minute, but it has gone on for as long as 10 minutes. You can hear some noises like pre detonation and also get some smoke out the tail pipe. It seems like the timing is getting messed up temporarily.
I know this is the cam or crank position error and this is what I have done. I have replaced the cam sensor in the distributor, the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I also have put in a new IAC and cleaned the throttle body. I have also put dielectric grease on the plug of the TPS and the crank sensor. The distributor rotor has about 5-10 degrees of rotational slop and no side to side movement.
What I am wondering is if anyone has ever had to change the crank sensor for this problem? Also, what about a sloppy timing chain? The truck only has 80,000 on it. Please let me know your experiences.

Message: The factory timing chain is extremely sloppy, that one can be sure of. I think they were sloppy from the factory.
