I just bought a 1997 Dakota 3.9L, and doing tune-ups and all that. I'm in process of replacing the drive belt, and it seems like an easy job to do, but I can't get the new belt on. I got the old belt off by taking off the tensioner pulley, but I cannot put it back on, probably 'cause I don't know how to work the tensioner on this truck. So what do I do to put it on again?

Stick a wrench/ratchet on the end and then turn the bolt on the tensioner like you're tightening it...and the tensioner will move toward the right allowing you to put the belt on it and still have slack...then let the tensioner go back into place.
I'd suggest buying a new tensioner and replacing it as well...tensioners like to go bad on our trucks I've heard, though I've never had any problems.

you needed not take the tensioner off
just a socket and break bar or socket wrench
I also have a short pipe to slip over it to give easier leverage
the routing of the belt should be on the underside of the hood (a label with picture) it can be tricky and confusing
another suggestion DO NOT THROW YOUR OLD BELT OUT
never know when it might be a backup needed especially in small towns with limited parts auto stores or a garage that would have to order it

Why the heck are you takin' it off if you can't put it back together? If you don't know what you are doin' leave it alone and get someone else to fix it. Unbelievable!!!
