Subject: 92 not shifting right IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
This may sound strange but I can "feel" when my truck is about to shift.. or like, I know when it usualy shifts and I've noticed it doesnt like to shift into 4th.. It's a 92 3.9 Auto and I'll get pissed because the RPM's just keep climbing instead of shifting so I'll stop down on it and that doesnt help... Could it just be due to cold weather or what??
Thank you!

Message: from service manual delayed 3-4 upshift could be because of:
low fluid level
overdrive solenoid faulty
overdrive clutch pack problem
TPS problem

Message: well if you keep gettting pissed and stomping on it then it won't last much longer lol. anyway, if it's shifting normaly in the other gears then it probably is just the solenoid or tps. mine was doing the same and i replaced the solenoid and readjusted the bands and it fixed the prob.

Message: haha, you're right... How much is that going to cost me roughly? I'm trying to start a 408 project so i'm trying to save as much as I can lol... but tranny is more important than the 408.. cant do much with a 408 without a tranny :-)

Message: it was less then $50 for the solenoid, new gasket, fluid, filter, adjusting the bands was free cause i did it myself.

Overdrive engages when coolant temp is above 60F. Lockup engages when coolant is above 140F (at least on Gen II trucks). If the temp gauge is just a hair above the cold line, it's warm enough to engage lockup. So if it still won't engage, it is likely the solenoid pack. I bought it at the dealer for $50, and gasket and fluid were another $20 or so. In my case, the solenoid pack screws were very loose, and tightening them may have solved the problem, but I chose to use the new part, anyway.
