Subject: Milage is getting worse IP: Logged
Message: Hi folks
i noticed that my milage has gotten worse from one tank to the other. i already checked the spark plugs, distributor and air filter but everything was in good shape. What else could I check?
Thanx a lot

Message: The tire pressure is good.
yeah the weather got a little colder but not extremly...i live in Germany
The O2 Sensors could be the problm, i have been getting P0138 and P0420 codes a few times.
How can I test these suckers?

Message: you'd either have to check in a Haynes repair manual or Dodge Factory service manual. i don't know the exact numbers on testing it.

Message: P0138 = O2 sensor shorted to voltage oxygen sensor input voltage maintained above normal.
P0420 = catalytic converter efficiency catalyst 1/1 efficiency below required level.

Message: i got hooked the truck up to a obd 2 diagnostic tool to check on the o2 sensor voltages.
the voltage of the first o2 sensor changed quickly from values around 0.2 V 0.8 V and seemed to work just fine.
the second o2 sensor had a steady output of 1.0 V. I don't think thats supposed to be that way. Do I need to get a new sensor? Is it hard to install one?
Is this the cause for the decrease in milage?
Thx a lot in advance

Message: I believe they're pretty easy to change out...might have to splice a couple wires if it doesn't have a harness to do a quick swap (never done it before), but otherwise you just gotta unscrew the old one and screw in the new one.
It's definitely that O2 sensor that has the steady voltage. They're sposed to flip flop from like .2 to .8v.

Message: Will this solve the milage problem? I read somewhere that the second o2 sensor (downstream) doesn't have any influence on the fuel mixture. Or does it?

Message: i have the same problem on my truck
upstream sensor is good but the downstream sensor reads steady 1V.
Do I NEED to replace the sensor since its quite expensiv? What about loss of mpg?
appreciate your advice

I don't wanna spend 100 bucks for nothing.
Please!

Yes, you should replace them. Running rich will eventually destroy the cat.

Message: check TPS sensor i had same problem; went from 17mpg to 9mpg; no codes showed up and had dealer check also and no codes; to check keep the gas pedal at around 55 and keep it steady and with my other foot tap the brake. you should hear the truck miss or rpm's surge. this is due to static also it won't show up on any computer dionostic test. just a suggestion

Message: Change the second sensor! When mine went bad I was going through a tank of gas in about 50 miles. I put in the new one, and the mpg went right back to normal. I am not really sure how hard it is for this specific truck though, because mine was still under warranty at the time, so the dealor did it for me.
