Subject: Detonation, causes and fixes?

Hi, I am getting a pinging when accelerating. Had a leaky exhaust, fixed it, changed plugs and no help. The old plugs were whiter than normal. Any ideas? Is it possible to do the timing or does the computer adjust automatically. I am not getting any warning lights so I doubt it's the O2 sensor. thanks guys.

See above for info and possible ' fixes '.
Also , if one of your local gas stations has
Ethanol in the gas -=- Try it...
It fixed mine....

go to a colder heat range on the plugs [try one step colder]this should help some and may stop it completely

plus try a higher octane fuel,if you run 87,try 89,this will help also

you may have alot of carbon build-up,you can remove this by spraying, misting water over the TB with the motor up to temp and running faster than idle, you may need two people for this

one or all of these should stop the ping

Sounds like its running lean. Try checking for vaccuum leaks from a bad intake manifold gasket

Vern's sujestion most likely is your answer. plenum gasket. I'm going to expand on that and say look for a vavumn leak anywhere and everywhere. Your getting to much air into the intake thus causing the white plug color. It is possible your getting a lean fuel mix but not so likely as to much air

So many problems .... So little time
